英語で人に何かを尋ねたり質問をする時には
いくつかの聞き方があります。

What is the most popular book in this book store?
Where is Jon going this afternoon?
How much did the new table cost?
Why can't we go to the zoo with him?

これらは普段よく使う質問のかたちです。
いわゆるDirect Questionです。

ここで別の尋ね方としてあるのがIndirect Questionsです。
どういうものかと言うと、

Could you tell me what the most popular book is in this book store?
Do you know where Jon is going this afternoon?
Do you have any idea how much the new table costs?
Would you mind telling me why we can't go to the zoo with him?

これらのかたち(Indirect question)を使う事によって
より丁寧でソフトな聞き方になります。

例えば、郵便局はどこですか？
と道を歩いている人に尋ねる時、
Where is the post office? と尋ねるよりは、
Excuse me, do you know (Could you tell me) where the post office is please?

と尋ねた方が丁寧に聞こえ、相手の人も親切に教えてくれるでしょう。
特に初めて話しかける人に対してや、店の中で何かを尋ねる時にはよく使います。
聞き方にもvariationが出来ます。
